Population control and abortion do not seem to go together but they basically have the same solution.
The biggest problem facing mankind is not climate change, although that is certainly a serious and potentially fatal issue for the future of humans on planet Earth. The biggest problem is unrestricted population growth.
Wars and pandemics have always been a source of population restriction but the advances in communication and understanding across the globe, and the advances in medical science have both conspired to reduce the effectiveness on population control of these traditional killers. Despite the recent Covid-19 pandemic, and Vladimir Putin’s anachronistic war against Ukraine, that trend of traditional methods of population control being less and less effective seems bound to continue.
Almost all the elements of concern in today’s world can be traced back to one fundamental issue. Too many people. And the problem is certain to get worse if it is not addressed.
Climate change, scarcity of food, scarcity of potable water, road congestion, pollution, air quality, exhaustion of natural resources, overloaded social services, reduction of the ozone layer that protects the Earth from the Sun’s dangerous radiation, wars over territories, among other potential calamities facing mankind, can all be traced back to too many people.
I said in my blog last week, in addressing the issue of abortion, that we are still doing it wrong. I added that we have the solution that would relegate abortion to a minor issue if we could only get our act together in a forceful campaign of contraception. We have “The Pill”, we have the “Morning-after Pill” and we have reversible vasectomies.
EXACTLY THE SAME SOLUTION CAN BE APPLIED TO POPULATION CONTROL, WORLDWIDE. WE HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE, THE SKILLS AND THE METHODS. ALL WE NEED IS THE GUTS, THE WILL AND THE VISION.
The current approach to abortion and population control is, in the first case, mis-direction, and, in the second case, blindness. Both these myopic approaches will almost certainly lead to disaster, albeit on different scales.
Abortion has and will hand politics over to religious fanatics, and unrestricted population growth will lead to an unlivable planet, and the demise of mankind.
BOTH CAN BE SOLVED BY CONTRACEPTION.
Mankind might survive the religious fanatics but it won’t survive unrestricted population growth.
On our present course of always waiting to just past the last minute, we will be faced with draconian solutions to the population problem. Mass exterminations, planned pandemics, mass sterilizations and possibly other equally unacceptable methodologies.
Contraception has become a part of our daily life in almost all of the world’s communities. Let’s use what we have, and have accepted for the most part.
WE HAVE THE SOLUTION TO BOTH PROBLEMS. HOW MYOPIC AND STUPID CAN WE BE?
